Elective affinities: The musicians and compositions known and loved by Johann Wolfgang Goethe, performed as the poet heard them. The repertoire for piano trio spanning the years from 1780 to 1830 marks the rise of this combination of instruments to pre-eminent position in the field of chamber music. Musicians such as Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, as well as lesser-known composers such as Hummel, wrote for this small but vibrant ensemble a number of unequalled masterpieces.
Goethe, in his long and eventful life, befriended and inspired these great musicians. “Voces Intimae” propose a profile of this repertoire, usually performed on period instruments but also possible on modern ones, from the early masterpieces of the classical era to the ardent romantic trios.

Hummel Piano Trios, Volumes 1 & 2 on Warner Classics
Hummel's Piano Trios have been recorded more often and more reliably than most of his music, and when you surrender to their charms and humour it's easy to feel the appeal. But they're worth so much more here in the hands of Voces Intimae on period instruments, with a fortepiano that chuckles away in perfect balance with the string players, and whose light action allows the trickiest of runs to be despatched with gusto.
The dance rhythms are earthier, the string sounds leaner and more acerbic, the vibrato tastefully applied for colour and emotional effect, and there's a vitality about the performances that puts the competition in the shade.
